Even the most calm and organised person can feel the frazzle of the dazzle in the lead up to Christmas. There are more things to do, more social engagements, more farewells, more family, more of everything in fact! Everything except time and space perhaps, and the extra energy needed to accomplish the tasks at hand.
Amidst the busyness of my day this week I came upon a lovely flier put out by my local wholefoods shop (Thank You Piko!) that reminded me what I could do to stay chill this Holiday season. It was strategically placed on the counter- the place where you might be waiting, waiting in line, waiting for your groceries to be processed- in other words, where a wee tiny bit of space may have opened up. I can’t remember all of its advice, but what stayed with me were three key points:
Remember that Christmas is about being with the people you love.
Get into nature.
Sage advice! I plan to do all three. And maybe a glass of the organic feijoa bubbles that I put in the trolley that day too.

The celebration season can be a mixed blessing for anyone, with treats and indulgences aplenty it is all too easy to end up feeling less than fabulous! This is amplified for those with food allergies, sensitivities or intolerances who have too many opportunities to be tempted by foods they know aren’t doing them any favours. Unless you have a particular reaction to summer fruits, this is your chance to eat cherries in abundance and make the most of seasonal goodness. You don’t have to miss out on the fun of tasty treats just because you can’t do gluten or dairy! There are plenty more culinary joys to be had, and the key to any joy in life is focusing on what you have, and what you can have, rather than what you can’t. Nectarines, Cherries, Apricots and Peaches are peaking right now, don’t let summer pass you by without some juicy goodness dripping down your chin.
Immersion in the ocean must be one of the oldest and most reliable remedies for all manner of stress and malaise. Research shows that the minerals in sea water have specific beneficial health effects. If sand and sunburn put you off the beach, there is always the calmer, greener and fresher option of a river swim. If neither are available to you, a pool can work wonders! Swimming in cold water may stimulate the release of adrenaline, dopamine and serotonin via the stimulation of temperature receptors in the skin. So the feel good factor is genuine and measurable. We don’t need science to make this legit though; water brings out our playful silky selves, it feels GOOD.
Stripping it all away…Simplicity
When it all feels too much, it probably is! Whatever Christmas means to you, try to keep the essence of that front and centre as you go about your busy days. Whether it’s about being thankful, giving to others, being with family, or eating great food, keep it as simple as possible. For some people Christmas is a very hard time, be gracious! Breathe deeply, enjoy what blessings you have.
